The starter which requires alot of current and is located near large heat source (your headers) is very suceptible to heat soak. Certain starter are more heat resistant than others but keeping heat away from the starter will address the root cause and increase reliability. There are a few different approaches to this.

Heat soak can usually be solved by installing a heat shield on the starter; this will reflect the heat away from starter. In fact, many vehicles are originally equipped from the factory with a heat shield. Unfortunately, they are often discarded when the starter is replaced. You can likely find a used heat shield at a salvage yard, or source a new one from your local parts store. Other fixes can involve upgrading the battery cables with a heavier gauge cable or installing a higher capacity ...

Jul 28, 2005 · I had a new mini starter on my 60 for a while using only the original spacer/gasket behind the starter. I had all sorts of engagement problems with the starter, never did find out if it was the starter or the gasket or a combination of both. I finally put the old flywheel back in and went back to the old starter.

There's not a lot of surface area to act as a heat exchanger so it shouldn't have a large effect on heating up the intake air. Aluminum is an okay heat transfer material in direct contact (conduction) but you need a lot of surface area to have a cooling effect (imagine the huge surface area of all of the fins of an intercooler).

Discussion Starter · #1 · Mar 13, 2017 Is anyone else in southern hemisphere suffering bad heat soak with your engine? I ask as on the weekend went for long drive towards Western suburbs in Sydney (32C) with lots of stop starts and engine was starved of cold air for turbo to give boost.
You might experience heat soak if they’re not coated properly or if they’re too close to other vital components like lines or your starter, you could essentially make everything a little too toasty. If you can’t get them ceramic coated, buy some heat wrap for the things around it.

May 15, 2014 · With the starter in the truck you can see the clearance around the header and framerail. Even if direct contact is not an issue, the smaller profile of the mini starter allows for more airflow. That means it will not heat soak as badly as a factory starter.
That is why they offer you Cold Air Intake Parts from Cold Air Inductions, Inc. Cold Air Inductions intake tubes have Ceramic Coating inside and out to reduce heat soak by keeping radiant heat from penetrating the ambient intake air and are made of high quality .08" aluminum, not heat absorbing plastic. Our cold air intake parts apply 3/8'' thermal insulation in the box preventing heat transfer from the engine bay and keeping incoming air cool.
Yes it heat soaks. I had temps at 100 degrees with factory box and prl upgrade vs 140 with the MAPerformance. So i got the prl intercooler and i got a Maperformance intake waiting to be installed. In your opinion would you know if temps would be a big change or not so much with the intercooler...
Mar 02, 2009 · 3) No headers will not burn up a starter. If the headers are a tight fit in the car/truck and gets real close to starter, you can get heat soak where the starter will drag and turn over slow after a long drive. This is a rare prob in a full size truck though.
